As a foreign student at the local universities or polytechnics with a student pass, can I do part-time work during term time?

Foreign students are not allowed to engage in any form of employment in Singapore, whether during term time or vacation time, unless they are granted Work Pass exemption under the Employment of Foreign Manpower (Work Pass Exemptions) Notification. The details of the exemption notification, which includes foreign students on vacation and part time employment of foreign students, are shown below.

Can any one get exemption in security deposit?

Exemption from the security deposit requirement may be granted to:

  •  Holders of valid Dependent’s Pass, long term social visit pass and work pass
  •  Foreign students who study in kindergartens registered with Ministry of Education / Childcare centers licensed by MCYS
  • Foreign students who attend a full-time course at an approved Private Education Institution that is awarded Singapore Quality Class for Private Education Organization, or SQC(PEO) by SPRING, Singapore
  •  Foreign students who pursue a full-time university degree (Graduate / Post-Graduate) programme at an approved private education institution, except for the University of London (UOL) tuition programme.
  •  Below 16 years old at the point of application
  •  Malaysians / Brunei nationals
  • Children or Spouse of Singapore Citizens / Permanent Residents
How much security deposit is required upon approval of student pass application?

Upon approval of the student pass application, an In-Principle Approval (IPA) letter will be issued to the applicant. The security deposit, if required, would be indicated in the IPA letter to the applicant. For Indian people rate per person and form of security deposit is S$5,000 in the form of a Banker’s Guarantee from any established banks in Singapore or Casher’s Order

Depending on the type of educational institution that a foreigner is intending to study at, the requirements and procedures for applying for a Student’s Pass will differ

Is the guardianship required for international students for International Students?

Every international student is required to provide the particulars of his / her guardian to the school for contact purposes. The guardian should be a Singapore Citizen / Singapore Permanent Resident above 21 years old or the parent of the international student if the parent is working/staying in Singapore. Every international student is required to report any change in guardianship to his/her school principal.

What is the difference between private and public institutions?

Public Schools are government schools. They are registered and managed by the Ministry of Education, Singapore. In Singapore, there are 11 gazetted public holidays and three scheduled school holidays in a calendar year.

Who can apply for student Pass for Singapore?

Any foreign resident desirous of pursuing full-time studies in Singapore in an institution which is registered with the Ministry of Education (MOE); or has obtained approval from the Commissioner, ICA to accept international student, needs to apply for a Student’s Pass.
